How to Develop an Instant Connection with an Interviewer

Develop Instant Rapport During an Interview

Searching for a way to break the ice at your next interview? Here are five topics you can turn to:

  1. Geographic Locations: You can almost always find a city both you and your interviewer have lived in, traveled to, or always wanted to visit.

  2. Schools: Did you and your interviewer go to the same school? Maybe you both took the same major? If so, chat about it!

  3. Sports: If your interviewer seems interested in sports, ask them what they thought of the big game last night. You can also discuss the latest news about your local team.

  4. Weather: This topic is a classic for a reason! A quick chat about the nice weather you’ve been having or the big storm that’s on the way is a great way to break the ice.

  5. Something Personal: When the interviewer asks how you’re doing, elaborate a little bit by adding a short personal note. “I’m great! My daughter just got into college!” or “Good, but busy! We’re in the middle of a move!” are excellent conversation starters.

Do some quick research into your interviewer beforehand to figure out which of these five topics you should use.
